Here to stay.

Our History.

Founded in the late 1990’s, the LSE SU German Society has a rich history as one of the university's most vibrant and enduring student organizations. Established to foster cultural exchange and strengthen ties between Germany and the LSE community, the society has evolved into a platform for intellectual dialogue, networking, and collaboration. Through its more than 25 years of history, the German Society became one of the most active societies on campus and one of the largest German student organizations anywhere in the world.

Another milestone was reached in 2002, when the annual German Symposium was initiated. The symposium became one of the largest student-led conferences on German affairs in the UK in a short time. It attracts prominent speakers from politics, business, academia, and culture, providing a unique forum for discussing critical issues shaping Germany and Europe. Since 2019, additional to LSE members and the public, the German Society invites students from across Europe to become a Scholar of the Symposium (SOTS-programme) and to take an active part in the discussions. The German Society and the ‚Stiftung der Deutschen Wirtschaft‘ cover the majority of the participant’s costs.

Through the many years of the German Society, students from all around the world had the chance to see high-profile speakers such as Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Siemens CEO Joe Kaeser or former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. Continuing its legacy, the German Society continues to play a vital role in bridging international perspectives and enriching the university's global outlook.
